Reception Volunteer

Reception Volunteer – St Leonard’s Hospice

About the Role Reception plays an important part in everyone’s first impressions of St Leonard’s Hospice, and is the hub for the daily activities of the organisation. Our volunteer receptionists support us by warmly welcoming patients, families, guests and visitors to the hospice, as well as handling phone calls, donations, and enquiries from patients’ relatives and the public.


When Are Your Shifts?

The Reception is staffed by volunteers during:

  • Weekday evenings: 4:45 pm – 8 pm
  • Weekends: 9 am – 8 pm
  • Lunchtime cover: Two-hour shifts approximately 12:30 pm – 2:30 pm (weekdays)

Current Vacancies:

Saturday evening: 5 pm – 8 pm

  • Shifts are typically covered fortnightly, but coverage of additional shifts may be available.
  • Training requirements: Attend forthnightly 2-hour training sessions, currently held Monday–Thursday in the morning or afternoon sessions.

Responsibilities

  • Welcoming:-greet new patients, families, and all other visitors in a courteous and friendly manner, adhering to current COVID guidance.
  • Telephone handling:-answer the phone efficiently and sensitively, directing calls appropriately and responding to enquiries.
  • Area management:-keep the reception area well-presented and tidy.
  • Donations: occasionally process donations from members of the public.
  • Shop duties:-process purchases through the reception shop.
  • Out-of-hours support:-answer calls for the Single Point of Coordination at night, taking messages.

Skills & Qualities Required

  • Experience in a customer service environment.
  • Enthusiasm for meeting and engaging with diverse individuals.
    • Clear, articulate voice and professional telephone manner.
  • Good handwriting, spelling, and numeracy skills.
  • Ability to be empathetic, approachable, and positive.
  • Reliability, flexibility, and dependability in all engagements.
  • Strict confidentiality compliance.
  • Understanding of personal and professional boundaries.
  • Capacity to stay calm under pressure and manage complex/sensitive situations.

Support & Supervision

  • Line manager: Our Senior Receptionist, who will train, schedule, and liaise with you on role duties.
  • Volunteer Services: Responsible for new volunteer induction and general queries.

Training

  • Face-to-face sessions with the Senior Receptionist (Mondays–Thursdays).
  • Complete mandatory training via an online platform.
  • Ongoing training (booster/refresher) conducted via e-learning, video, or in-person.
