Recovery Coordinator/Family Worker – Dual Role (HMP Durham)
Location: HMP Durham Hours: 37 per week Schedule: 08:00–16:00 (Mon–Thu) & 08:00–15:30 (Fri) Contract: Fixed-term cover until August 2027 Salary: £25,877.80–£34,240 (full earning potential; starting salary varies by experience)

Our 3,500 staff and volunteers provide services to around 125,000 people annually. We are committed to helping individuals live safer, healthier, and more independent lives through mental health support, substance use recovery, housing, and domestic abuse initiatives.
About the Role
This is a dual role combining Recovery Coordinator and Family Worker at HMP Durham.
You will:
- Provide collaborative recovery planning and case management for substance misusers (drug and alcohol) and their families.
- Support transition planning for individuals moving between custody and the community.
- Strengthen family reconnection programs to mitigate the impact of substance use and offending behaviour.
- Maintain ongoing case management, including risk assessments, safeguarding, and treatment reviews.
What You’ll Do
Case Management & Engagement
- Conduct triage/screening and comprehensive assessments with service users.
- Develop and implement personalised recovery plans in collaboration with team members, families, and external agencies.
- Liaise with multi-disciplinary teams (managers, therapists, external partners) via:
- Case reviews
- Team meetings
- Supervision contacts
- Telephone consultations

Family & Welfare Support
- Work intensively with families and carers to:
- Reduce harm linked to substance use.
- Strengthen positive parent-child relationships.
- Develop parental skills and mental health/well-being interventions.
- Implement Think Family approaches to improve outcomes for children and families.
Recovery & Harm Reduction
- Enhance self-sufficiency via:
- Treatment access.
- Community resource facilitation.
- Peer support opportunities aligned with visible recovery ideals.
- Diminish substance-related risks through:
- Monthly drug screening.
- Duty & BBV (blood-borne virus) testing support.
- Needle exchange services.
- Customised alcohol/drug harm reduction interventions.
Prison-Reentry Support
- Collaborate with prison/community teams to plan release or transfer transitions.
- Aid reintegration and re-establishment in the community.
What You’ll Need
Key Skills & Knowledge
- Proficiency in harm reduction strategies for drug/alcohol dependency.
- Evidence-based intervention experience, including:
- Motivational Interviewing (MI)
- Psychoeducational Skills Training (PSIs)
- Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
- Ability to apply frameworks such as NICE, DOH, NTA, CQC, and Caldicott Guidelines.
- Case management expertise for online databases and risk-management.
- Comfort working with intensive, sometimes emotionally demanding family situations.
- Strong interpersonal skills and resilience to maintain boundaries.
