HGV Recovery Driver – The AA

Salary:

  • Guaranteed minimum £38,591 for CE (HVG 1) license
  • £35,111 for C (HGV 2) license

This includes a location allowance.

On Target Earnings:

  • £44,720 for CE
  • £39,065 for C license

Shifts:

  • Rolling roster – work 18 days out of every 28, with two full weekends off.
  • Standard Shift Duration: 9 hours and 45 minutes, including a 45-minute break.
  • Flexibility Required: Requirement for end-of-shift flexibility, with potential up to 12-hour shifts (including breaks) depending on operational needs.

Location:

  • Depot Postcode: RG2 0QA
  • Eligibility: Must live within 25 miles or 1-hour travel from the depot.

About the Role

As an HGV Recovery Driver, you’ll work independently in your truck but transform into a reassuring presence when supporting The AA’s members during breakdowns. Your combination of technical expertise, empathy, and resilience will ensure safe and efficient vehicle recovery.

Your efforts will make a real difference, whether transporting a vehicle to a garage or helping someone reach their destination quickly, making their day better.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Delivering exceptional service by safely recovering vehicles while reassuring customers in urgent situations.
  • Working independently across diverse locations and conditions while maintaining strong team collaboration.
  • Solving problems quickly using technical skills and a calm, solution-focused approach in a variety of roadside situations.
  • Staying compliant with EU Regulations & Working Time Directive (WTD) while upholding The AA’s commitment to excellence with a motto: “Push for Better.”

Requirements

Essential:

  • Full Category C (HVG Class 2) driving licence required.
    • Gaining a CE (HGV Class 1) licence will be supported by The AA.
  • Valid Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) and a digital tachograph card.
  • Confidence in adopting new technology—curiosity and openness to training will be rewarded.
  • Flexibility to work shift patterns, including evenings, weekends, and Bank Holidays.
