Peer Support Volunteer - Recovery Academy (Newcastle)

About the Role

We value our volunteers and seek to ensure their diverse roles are rewarding and beneficial to all. Waythrough holds the Investors in Volunteers accreditation, recognising our commitment to excellent volunteer support.

Key Responsibilities

The role involves a range of tasks essential to supporting individuals on their recovery journey:

  • Working with the team to deliver structured programmes
  • Co-facilitating and supporting recovery sessions
  • Providing peer support to clients (assisting recovery coaches with home visits and assessments)
  • Supporting clients through their recovery journey
  • Raising awareness of our service and connecting clients with additional support

Specific Tasks

  • Complete all mandatory training on time (computer-based modules)
  • Attend supervision sessions every 8–12 weeks

Skills & Attributes We’re Looking For

We believe your unique experiences and strengths are just as important as formal qualifications. To excel in this role, we’d like you to have:

  • Good IT skills
  • Strong written communication
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to track multiple tasks and report progress
  • A non-judgmental approach towards individuals with lived experience
  • Confidence to engage with people by email and phone
  • Excellent time-keeping
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, following clear instructions
  • Familiarity with Waythrough’s mission and vision (information available on our website)
  • A genuine interest in supporting our mission to create lasting change in people’s lives
  • Ability to maintain professional boundaries, adhere to policies, and engage fully in training and supervision

Location & Commitment

  • Location: Newcastle Recovery Academy
  • Time Commitment: Minimum 3 hours per week (up to 15 hours with agreement)
  • Training Requirement:
    • Attend 1-day induction workshop (online or in-person)
    • Access to a training platform, with modules to be completed within 3 months post-start
    • Ambassadors: Additional training (1-day course covering 6 weekly sessions)
