About the Team – Waste and Recycling Services
Our Recycling Centre service team is seeking self-motivated individuals to support the vision of increasing recycling rates and diverting waste from landfill in Hertfordshire.
About the Role
All training is provided, including:
- First Aid
- Fire Marshall
- Manual Handling
- Plant/Equipment Operation (Training provided for operating JCBs)

Responsibilities (Recycling Operative)
- Show and assist service users in proper waste disposal.
- Check permits for vans and trailers to confirm compliance.
- Prevent mixing of waste streams.
- Maintain a clean and tidy work environment.
- Identify opportunities to improve customer service and recycling rates.
- Use JCBs and compactors for waste compaction (Training provided).
Responsibilities (Flexi Operative)
This role requires flexibility in working hours and locations. A fixed UK driving licence, access to a vehicle (with approved mileage reimbursement), and experience working across multiple sites are essential.
Key duties include:
- Safe sorting and handling of recyclable materials.
- Maintaining site hygiene and order.
- Assisting with equipment operation where trained (Compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations).
- Travelling between Council sites to provide essential waste/recycling cover.

This role is vital to HCC’s push for sustainability and high-quality public service delivery, ensuring residents have access to efficient waste management and recycling services.

About You
HCC is looking for motivated individuals who:
- Enjoy working in a team environment.
- Have a track record of excellent customer service.
- Can stay calm under pressure, providing guidance on waste disposal during incidents.
- Have physical stamina, as the job involves working in various weather conditions.
Must have a full UK driving license for Flexi Operative roles and easy access to a vehicle.
