The Recycling Centre service team seeks self-motivated individuals to help increase recycling rates and divert waste from landfill in Hertfordshire.
About The Role
All training is fully provided, including First Aid, Fire Marshal, Manual Handling, and Plant Safety. Career progression within the team is encouraged if you demonstrate the right aptitude.

Current Openings:
- Recycling Operative – St Albans
- Flexi Operative – Stevenage, Waterdale & Berkhamsted
Responsibilities:
- Guide and assist service users in correct waste disposal
- Verify permits for vans/trailers and ensure correct waste separation
- Maintain clean and tidy working conditions
- Continually seek ways to improve customer service and recycling rates
- Operate JCBs and compactors (training provided) for waste compaction
Flexi Operative Duties:
Flexibility is key: while you’ll work at a designated recycling site, you’ll also provide cover at other Council locations. Your safe and efficient handling of:
- Recyclable materials
- Maintenance of site hygiene
- Equipment operation (where trained) must adhere to health, safety, environmental regulations, and Council procedures.
Role Requirements:
- Must hold a full UK driving licence; access to a vehicle to travel across sites
- Approved mileage expenses provided, aligned with Council policy
- Critical role in supporting sustainability and high-quality public services

Preferred Attributes:
- Proven track record in customer service under pressure
- Ability to remain calm and provide clear waste advice to residents in complex situations
- Experience handling ethically challenging conversations
- Preparedness to work across all weather conditions
- Ability to sustain physical effort for prolonged periods
Must-Have Requirements:
- A full UK driving licence with access to a vehicle
- Sustainable right to work documentation in the UK
