# Regional Chief Nursing Officer – NHS England North West
Regional leadership opportunity to shape the future of care across one of the most dynamic regions in the country.
About the Role
NHS England North West is inviting applications for a Regional Chief Nursing Officer—a prestigious and influential role overseeing the professional direction of nursing, midwifery, and allied health professions workforce.
In this senior leadership position, you’ll provide strategic oversight and ensure the delivery of safe, high-quality services while driving the transformation required for the future. You’ll play a critical role in improving service delivery across the region’s integrated care systems, championing workforce development, and supporting national clinical strategies.
The North West is in the midst of recovery and stabilisation after the pandemic, with some areas needing targeted support. As part of a three-person ‘triumvirate’ alongside the Regional Medical Director and Regional Chief Delivery and Transformation Officer, you’ll act as a trusted advisor, leading quality assurance, performance evaluation, and clinical improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic direction for nursing, midwifery, and allied health professions workforce across the region.
- Support the implementation of NHS England’s quality strategy and new modern service frameworks, including cardiovascular disease and sepsis.
- Champion workforce development, wellbeing, and professional voice for frontline staff.
- Work closely with clinical and operational leaders to identify improvement opportunities.
- Assist in the assessment of provider and commissioner performance, providing expert clinical input.
- Enable high-quality care alignment with the NHS 10-Year Health Plan.
- Act as an executive team member, collaborating with the Regional Director on national objectives.
- Influence systemic transformation, leveraging clinical leadership to drive operational excellence.

Requirements & What We Look For
- Proven experience as a senior nursing or clinical leader with a track record of influencing policy and driving change.
- Strong strategic and operational capability to guide regional healthcare improvement.
- Expertise in workforce development, including safeguarding professional standards and fostering resilience.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with матмед, commissioners, and ICS teams.
- Experience in performance assessment, clinical governance, and quality assurance.
- Naval authority in your specialism and able to build trust a diverse, multi-disciplinary team.
- Regulatory eligibility to work in England (visa sponsorship not available).
- Commitment to post-holder obligations including locum requirements and attendance at important meetings may also apply.

Onboarding & Transition
If you currently work within the NHS, a streamlined Inter Authority Transfer (IAT) process will transfer key data (e.g., competency status, Continuing Service Dates) from your employer to NHS England.
