AECOM is currently seeking a Regional Director – Fire Engineering. This is a consultancy-based position with substantial oversight responsibilities. Successful candidates must demonstrate extensive experience across fire engineering sectors and the ability to manage technical teams effectively.

This directorial position offers senior professionals, including current consultants or experienced engineers, the opportunity to lift their career trajectory by transitioning to regional management within a fire safety consulting team. Core Responsibilities: Ensuring Excellence at Scale

Team Leadership & Performance

  • Oversee a team of fire engineers, guiding workload allocation, project delivery, and performance management.
  • Drive excellence in large-scale, complex projects—aligning outputs with regulatory requirements and client expectations.
  • Collaborate transparently with multi-disciplinary teams and national leadership, ensuring on-time, budget-compliant deliverables of the highest quality.
  • Lead annual performance reviews, setting SMART goals for direct reports and ensuring cascading adherence through the team hierarchy.
  • Conduct comprehensive staff appraisals and champion professional development plans (PDPs) to expand sector-specific expertise.
  • Foster mentorship and training, aiding early- and mid-career engineers on the path to Chartership.

Strategic Project Leadership

  • Provide fire engineering budget forecasts and schedules for national and international projects.
  • Assume leadership responsibility for mid-to-large-scale projects, ensuring quality, timelines and budgets.
  • Transition into an AECOM Approved Lead Verifier, ensuring projects meet organisational strategy.
  • Qualify as an AECOM Approved Project Manager, acting as the authority approver.
  • Initiate and sustain technical client engagements, playing a central role in client acquisition.

Business Growth & Strategic Engagement

  • Uphold excellence in health and safety compliance across all operations and engagements (internal sessions, client projects, site visits, etc.).
  • Maintain and strengthen client relationships, proactively fostering long-term partnerships.
  • Champion AECOM’s Fire Engineering offerings, cultivating internal and external business opportunities.
  • Drive and strategise recruitment for national fire engineering teams, ensuring talent alignment with business growth.
  • Develop a focused marketing plan prioritising collaborative client engagement, advancing the company’s wider fire safety solutions.

Eligibility & Requirements: Critical Knowledge & Proven Experience

Essential Qualifications

  • Substantial experience in UK fire engineering projects, spanning diverse sectors.
  • Profound expertise in multi-disciplinary environments, aligning complex fire engineering solutions with broader project objectives.
  • Rigorous command of UK fire fire regulations and standards, including (but not limited to):
    • Approved Document B (ADB)
    • BS 9991 (Guide to Retention), BS 9999 (Guide to Lidar modelling cave detection) and BS 9992 (Fire Safety for Occupants)
    • HTM 05-02, BB100
  • Proficient technical tool expertise:
    • Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS)
    • Structural Fire Engineering (SFE)
    • Evacuation modelling software navigators.
  • Membership of professional institutions such as:
    • Member of the Institution of Fire Engineers (MIFireE)
    • Certifications from:
      • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
      • Certified Fire Protection Engineer (CFPE)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Fire Engineering.
  • Advanced technical mastery in fire engineering tools, inclusive of structural fire safety engineering solutions.
  • A Master of Science (MSc) or PhD in a fire-related discipline.
  • Secure UK or international security clearance (or ability to obtain).
  • International fire safety experience, aligning with standards like:
    • International Code Council IBC
    • Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE)
    • NFPA approaches
