Our Children’s Social Care team works to provide and continuously improve services for children and families across Gateshead, delivering a joined-up approach to ensure young people have the very best start in life. This includes:
- Early help and prevention
- Assessment and intervention
- Safeguarding
- Services for children in and leaving our care
- Fostering, residential, and adoption support
- Vulnerable adolescents and disabled children

Investing in Cared-For Children
Gateshead Council is expanding its network of residential homes for young people in care. With six Homes (four established, two opening soon), we provide safe, nurturing environments where children can:
- Rebuild trust
- Re-engage with education
- Develop essential skills for independence
Each home is supported by a dedicated therapeutic team, including residential mental health practitioners and psychologists, with a trauma-informed, strength-based ethos. All homes are Ofsted-rated ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’.

We are seeking an experienced or aspiring Registered Manager to join our growing estate. You’ll work alongside an experienced, collegiate team dedicated to ensuring children are safeguarded, cared for, and empowered by a skilled professional team.
About the Role
Key Responsibilities
You’ll play a vital leadership role in ensuring children’s homes operate at the highest standards:
- Provide safe, nurturing environments free from abuse, neglect, and harm
- Promote trauma-informed, child-centred care
- Support placement stability and development
- Uphold legal, regulatory, and safeguarding obligations
- Partner with safeguarding, multi-agency teams, and community organisations
- Champion inclusion, equality, and excellence in care
- Ensure financial accountability and resource management

What You’ll Bring
Essential Experience & Qualifications
- Exceptional knowledge of Children’s Homes Regulations and Quality Standards, including understanding your statutory responsibilities as a Registered Manager
- Clear proficiency in SCIFF (Safeguarding Children Information from Frontline) and experience leading homes through Ofsted inspections
- Strong grasp of legislation, including:
- Children Act 1989 & 2004
- Care Act 2014
- Liberty Safeguards
- Other relevant statutory guidance
- Thorough understanding of best practice, research, and policy for looked-after children and their families
- Child protection deep knowledge, particularly in residential contexts:
- Safeguarding thresholds
- Practice standards for children at high risk
- Proven experience in a Children’s Home setting, especially with children exhibiting complex risk-taking behaviours and safeguarding needs
Leadership & Management Microskills
- Supervisory/Leadership experience in children’s residential care:
- Bringing staff together for high-quality relational care
- Ensuring children feel loved, secure, and valued through robust relationship-building
- Experience of:
- Driving service improvement
- Championing a child-centred values culture
- Hands-on ability with:
- Managing complex child & young person needs
- Safeguarding placement stability
- Risk collaborative assessment
- Competence in:
- Regulatory quality assurance/Ofsted reports
- Reflective supervision & appraisals
- Strong inter-agency collaboration underpinned by coordinated safeguarding
- Budget oversight and financial accountability for the Home
- Proficiency in using practice systems for key documentation
Professional Requirements
- Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management of Residential Childcare (or must complete it within 18 months of appointment)
- Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare
- Up-to-date ChrisGuard safeguarding training + commitment to ongoing professional learning
Additional key requirement:
- Age criterion: minimum age four years older than the oldest child accommodated (due to Residents’ Home consent requirements per Children’s Homes Regulations).
