Regulatory Counsel

Hemel Hempstead (Hybrid – 3 days per week in office) Permanent | Full Time Competitive salary + bonus and benefits


About the Role

Are you a qualified solicitor with a passion for consumer finance? If so, Haven is looking for a highly experienced Regulatory Counsel to join our Legal team.

Reporting to the General Counsel, you’ll act as the lead advisor on all regulatory matters, ensuring the business complies with legal obligations, including those required by the:

  • FCA (Financial Conduct Authority)
  • Gambling Commission

You’ll serve as a trusted adviser to the Haven board, working closely with the Executive team, Finance, Commercial and Caravan Sales to provide expert guidance on:

  • Legal
  • Regulatory
  • Compliance
  • Corporate governance
  • Conduct risk issues

This high-impact, hands-on role suits a commercially minded specialist who thrives in complexity, enjoys shaping policy and process, and can translate regulatory obligations into practical outcomes.


Your Responsibilities

Core Advisory Role

  • Act as the lead advisor on regulatory matters, including:
    • FCA requirements
    • Gambling Commission obligations
    • Wider statutory compliance

Strategic & Executive Collaboration

  • Provide constructive challenge to the Haven board through regular reporting
  • Offer expert advice to:
    • Executive team on legal, compliance, corporate governance, and conduct risk
    • Internal stakeholders on financial crime, money laundering (AML), and related controls

Specialist Oversight

  • Oversee FCA obligations, ensuring robust processes and controls
  • Support Guernsey insurance captive administration and governance
  • Legal & regulatory advisory on financial promotions and advertising

Policies & Incident Management

  • Develop frameworks for policy, process, and procedures to ensure adherence to standards
  • Manage and investigate incidents (e.g. whistleblowing, consumer credit, consumer rights, data protection)

Commercial & Project Support

  • Provide clear, pragmatic advice for commercial projects

Continuous Learning & Adaptation

  • Stay up to date with corporate law and statutory obligations to maintain compliance

Requirements

  • Qualified solicitor in England & Wales
  • End-to-end consumer finance expertise, gained in:
    • In-house roles, or
    • Private practice
  • Financial services experience, ideally in:
    • Lending
    • Consumer credit
    • Motor finance
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • Consumer credit laws
    • Consumer Duty and its implications
  • Key competencies:
    • Analytical & problem-solving skills
    • Risk identification & assessment
    • Critical thinking and sound judgment
    • Excellence in communication (verbal, written, interpersonal)
    • Prioritisation & workflow management, able to adapt to pace and complexity
    • Business process understanding with a track record of supporting change
    • Confident stakeholder management and influence over senior leadership
  • Desirable (but not essential): Understanding of the leisure or hospitality sector
