Relief Worker - Carlow

Relief Worker - Carlow Service

Available to work shifts, night shift, over a 7-day rota: You can be available as little or as much as:

  • One day a week
  • Mid-week
  • Weekends only On-site | Salary: €17.49 per hour

About the Role

This role offers a fantastic opportunity to provide support to our organisation’s central services team. Depaul is a values-led organisation, working across services in the Republic and Northern Ireland. The project will report directly to the Local Management Team and will be responsible for providing an efficient and high-quality service at any of our projects, working alongside a covered, fully-trained staff team.

As a Relief Worker, you will provide:

  • Supported accommodation
  • Food
  • Shelter

Due to the transient nature of the role, relief workers must:

  • Think on their feet
  • Adapt quickly to new situations

This is an exciting opportunity to join a diverse team of talented individuals.


Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure practical needs of service users are met (in conjunction with ancillary staff and volunteers), such as:
    • Providing food
    • Managing laundry
    • Ensuring clean bedding
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment with high standards across the service.
  • Build trust and respect with all service users while handling difficult or problematic situations sensitively.
  • Carry out assigned rota duties.
  • Collaborate with team members to make consistent, project-aligned decisions.
  • Active participation in shift handovers.
  • Maintain records necessary for seamless service operation.
  • Ensure compliance with all Depaul Ireland policies and procedures, especially:
    • Health and Safety
    • Code of Practice
    • Confidentiality
  • Represent Depaul as a professional, high-quality performer aligned with:
    • Organisational aims
    • Values and ethics
  • Protect the safety, welfare, and well-being of service users—especially during night shifts.

Person Requirements

  • Experience with:
    • 1 year in the homelessness field or suitably related sector (preferably in a residential setting)*
    • OR
    • A Level 5 (or higher) qualification in a relevant social care field (e.g. Social Care, Psychology, Nursing)
  • Strong education and manual handling knowledge (qualification desirable).
  • Understanding of:
    • Harm reduction principles
    • Low-threshold working models
    • Reasons people become homeless, challenges they face, and how services can support complex needs.
  • Knowledge of risk management frameworks.
  • Ability to:
    • Maintain calmness during crises
    • Exercise independence to resolve incidents.
  • Capacity for collaborative teamwork, prioritising clear communication.
  • Health and Safety awareness in residential settings, particularly when working with homeless populations.
  • Awareness of and alignment with Depaul’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Proficient IT skills, including professional email management.

As a Depaul team member, you will receive:

  • Annual Leave:

    • Up to 25 days with 3 years' service.
    • Up to 27 days (after 3-5 years).
    • 30 days (over 5 years’ service). (Excludes bank/statutory holidays)
