About the Role
Job Title: PhD-Level Research Consultant (Math/Stats for AI Benchmarking) Contract Type: Freelance contract role Remote: Fully remote Compensation: $100+/hour (PhD-level expertise)
Support top AI research labs by leveraging your rigorous mathematical training to improve AI performance through benchmark revitalization.
Help strengthen large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT by:
- Crafting advanced math problems to assess AI capabilities
- Developing rigorous step-by-step solutions and evaluation criteria
No prior AI experience required—your PhD-level expertise is the key.
Key Responsibilities
- Problem Development
- Design sophisticated mathematical problems spanning multi-step reasoning, symbolic manipulation, abstraction, and algorithmic complexity.
- Ensure benchmarks are statistically sound and benchmark-agnostic (classroom-level to advanced theory challenges).

- Collaborate with researchers to refine existing problem sets for fairness, fairness boundaries, and nuanced reasoning tests.

- Provide critical, actionable feedback to improve AI model capabilities against learned thresholds.
Requirements
You must meet at least the following qualifications:
- Education: PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics (or closely related field, e.g., Theoretical Computer Science).
- Relevant Skills:
- Deep understanding of formal reasoning (proofs, symbolic computer algebra, abstraction frameworks).
- Proficiency in grad-level advanced mathematics + statistics (probability, analysis, algebra, etc.).
- Collaborative Ability:
- Ability to communicate mathematical solutions clearly and concisely in writing.
- Expedite input on complex assumptions, degenerate cases, or construct special challenges.
