Research Assistant
Mass Spectrometry Research Assistant – Proteomics & Cancer Biology
Grade: UE06 | Salary: £34,610 – £39,906 per annum Location: CMVM / School of Genetics and Cancer, University of Edinburgh Contract Type: Full-time (35 hours per week) | Fixed-term until 31st December 2027
The Opportunity
The Institute of Genetics and Cancer at the University of Edinburgh is seeking a motivated, highly organised Mass Spectrometry Research Assistant to support groundbreaking research into brain tumour biology, treatment resistance and therapeutic vulnerabilities. The role will focus on proteomics-based approaches, working alongside an interdisciplinary team across the IGC Mass Spectrometry Facility and associated laboratories.
This position is ideal for a dedicated scientist with experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, proteomics or analytical laboratory techniques who wishes to develop expertise in mass spectrometry. Key Responsibilities
- Support proteomics-based research across IGC laboratories, including brain tumour studies, therapeutic resistance and cancer treatment mechanisms.
- Collaborate with researchers on experimental design strategies for optimal data generation.
- Prepare samples for proteomic analysis, including:
- Protein extraction, quantification and digestion
- Peptide clean-up and quality control (QC)
- Utilise and refine bioinformatic pipelines for data analysis, quantification and interpretation of mass spectrometry results.
- Assist laboratory-based teams with LC-MS/MS workflows.
- Maintain accurate experimental records, sample inventories and data management systems.
- Contribute to reproducible, standardised workflows across multiple projects.
- Manage laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment organisation.
Key Skills & Experience
- Motivation to apply mass spectrometry, proteomics and molecular biology techniques to cancer research.
- Hands-on experience in biochemistry, molecular biology or analytical laboratory techniques (desirable for sample preparation).
- Experience with:
- Protein-based workflows (e.g., extraction, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting, immunoprecipitation).
- Mass spectrometry or proteomics (including LC-MS/MS)—preferred but not essential.
- Scientific software for data analysis and quantitative handling.
- Attention to detail, organisation and ability to work independently.

- Experience with filed-based technical support roles within a research facility.
