Research Assistant ("Pre-Doc") – Green Public Finance, Crowding In, and Local Growth
Department: Department of Geography and Environment Salary: £36,513 – £41,565 pa inclusive (progressive to £44,468), with London allowance, pro rated Tenure: 12 months (expected start: September 2026, subject to negotiation)
The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and truly inclusive university. We are seeking a full-time Research Assistant ("pre-doc") to collaborate closely with Professor Neil Lee on a funded project examining:
"How public green lending crowds in private capital and drives local economic growth."
This project compiles and analyses 20 years of climate-relevant finance data across European regions. It offers hands-on research experience in panel datasets, causal inference, and high-impact green finance policy, ideal for applicants considering top PhD programmes.

Responsibilities

Data work:
- Collect, clean, and merge microdata (patents, academic papers, etc.).
- Construct novel datasets from textual sources.
- Apply econometric/statistical tools (STATA, R, or Python).

Academic contribution:
- Assist with literature reviews and summarising research.
- Draft sections of academic papers.
- Present findings to collaborators as needed.

Project support:
- Identify and source new datasets for ongoing projects.
- Handle administrative/organisational tasks as required.
Requirements
Essential:
- Undergraduate or Master’s degree in Economics, Geography, Data Science, or a quantitative field (to be completed by start date).
- Proficiency in Python, R, or STATA.
- Willingness to learn unfamiliar tools (e.g., APIs, GitHub, new libraries).
- Experience with panel data analysis and difference-in-differences methods.
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- Ability to work independently, multitask, and meet deadlines.
