Research Assistant (Qualitative) – Sono-breech Study City, University of London / St George’s, University of London – Centre for Maternal and Child Health Research (CMCHR)
About the Role
The Centre for Maternal and Child Health Research (CMCHR)—a globally recognised hub—seeks a skilled Research Assistant to support the NIHR-funded Sono-breech Study, investigating the benefits of handheld ultrasound in routine maternity care. As part of City St George’s, University of London, one of London’s largest higher education destinations, this role ensures students and research are at the core of impactful, practice-led discoveries.
The permanent post focuses on qualitative data collection, analysis, and dissemination under external funding, subject to project outcomes.Developing career ambitions alongside the University’s vibrant community of research and professions.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead qualitative data collection across NHS study sites, including:
- Conducting observations and one-to-one interviews with birthing individuals and midwives
- Perform rigorous qualitative analysis (theming, coding, transcription support where required)
- Contribute to peer-reviewed publications and study technical reports
- Support dissemination activities (e.g., conference presentations, policy briefings)
- Collaborate with the research team and partners, ensuring adherence to:
- NHS standards
- Research governance frameworks
- Engage sensitively with participants while maintaining high ethical standards and independence.

Essential Qualifications & Skills
- A Master’s degree in one of the following (or closely related):
- Midwifery
- Social Science
- Health Psychology/Anthropology
- Direct experience of:
- Qualitative research methods (e.g., thematic analysis, interview techniques)
- Data analysis (using NVivo/ATLAS.ti, if applicable)
- A sound knowledge of:
- Current UK maternity care practices and community service models
- NHS working contexts (e.g. trust hierarchies, ethical protocols)
- Stakeholder engagement in child health interventions
- Exceptional communication skills for explaining complex fieldwork to non-academic colleagues
- Organisational competence – balancing time-sensitive research with deadlines
- Ability to conduct sensitive fieldwork with diverse populations, including:
- Pregnant individuals at different stages of care
- Midwives and healthcare staff across settings
- Proven ability to work independently while integrating into project teams.
Desirable
- Doctoral qualifications (useful for preliminary thematic development)
- Prior research within the NHS (e.g. R&D projects, practice-based scholarship)
- Experience with maternity or ultra-sound-specific research
- Familiarity with ** Aleksющих open-source tools for research** (Explaring, NVivo Lite probe).

Employment Arrangement

- Phased funding proposals required beyond the Sono-breech grant, primarily depending on pilot/trial outcomes.
