Research Assistant (Applied Microeconomics)
Internal Vacancy | Role Location: City, St George’s, University of London
About the Role
City St George’s, University of London is a dynamic institution at the forefront of business, practice, and the professions. Combining disciplines across health, business, law, and more, the university’s mission is to equip students and staff with the skills to tackle real-world challenges through applied research and professional development.
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Research Assistant to support Dr. Sujata Visaria (page) with cutting-edge empirical research focused on Vietnam and the Philippines. This is a hands-on role with potential for professional growth, particularly in the field of applied microeconomics and impact assessment, ideally aligned with academia or policy.
The successful candidate will work primarily on two high-impact research projects:
- A socio-economic impact study of cassava production in Vietnam, focused on local livelihoods.
- A randomised controlled trial (RCT) of a financial empowerment intervention for migrant workers in the Philippines (in partnership with overseas collaborators).
The role is permanent and offers opportunities for staff development, including access to leading-edge training. Funding is secured via external grants, meaning potential long-term continuation depends on ongoing research support.
Key Responsibilities
- Data Processing & Analysis:
- Clean and organise quantitive datasets (both primary and secondary).
- Perform descriptive and advanced analyses using statistical software.
- Survey & Tool Design:
- Contribute to questionnaire design for expert validates, with attention to cross-cultural adaptability.
- Develop intervention materials (e.g., training manuals) for migrant worker programmes.
- Research Support:
- Lead or assist with literature reviews for both projects.
- Present findings in internal team meetings, research seminars, and drafts for policy reports.
- Collaboration:
- Liaise with overseas research partners to ensure data workflows and fieldwork alignment.
- Work closely with Dr. Visaria and wider project teams to meet deadlines.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
