Research Assistant (Zuercher Lab) - Generative Biology Insititute
Postdoctoral Researchers - Zuercher Lab at the Generative Biology Institute (GBI)
At the Ellison Institute of Technology (EIT), we're committed to transforming scientific discovery into impactful real-world solutions. The Generative Biology Institute (GBI), under the leadership of Jason Chin, is at the forefront of making biology engineerable to address humanity’s greatest challenges across four key areas:
- Health, Medical Science & Generative Biology
- Food Security & Sustainable Agriculture
- Climate Change & Managing CO₂
- Artificial Intelligence & Robotics
Established in 2025, GBI operates in bespoke space at the Oxford Science Park, with plans to relocate to an upcoming 40,000 m² state-of-the-art facility to house 30 groups and up to 600 employees focused on revolutionising biology for societal benefit.
About the Role: The Zuercher Lab
We are seeking ambitious, creative, and highly skilled Postdoctoral Researchers to join the Zuercher Lab, led by Principal Investigator Jerome Zuercher. The lab focuses on two interconnected research areas:
Genetic Isolation
Addressing the critical challenge of preventing genetic interference between engineered organisms and natural biology or pathogens. The lab pioneers genome recoding and translational engineering, creating organisms with synthetic genetic codes to ensure genetic isolation and bioproduction safety.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
