Research Assistant/Research Associate Opportunity at University of Cambridge

An opportunity exists for a Research Assistant/Research Associate at the University of Cambridge to study strategies for ocean carbon removal. The successful applicant will join the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) and the Centre for Climate Repair in Cambridge under the primary supervision of Prof. John Taylor from 1 September 2026 or by negotiation (see http://www.damtp.cam.ac.uk/user/jrt51/ and https://www.climaterepair.cam.ac.uk for more information).

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will use OceanBioME (https://github.com/OceanBioME) and Oceananigans (https://github.com/Oceananigans) to study the coupled interactions between ocean physics, biogeochemistry, and kelp (macroalgae). The overall aim of the project is to quantify the potential for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) and sequestration associated with kelp forests (ocean reforestation) and seaweed farms and to identify potential impacts on biogeochemical cycles and natural primary production and carbon export.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
