About the Role
Newcastle University (School of Computing, Software Security Lab) seeks a highly motivated Research Assistant/Associate specialising in formal methods, with a focus on secure open-source software development.
Open-source ecosystems are vulnerable to supply chain attacks, where malicious code is embedded undetected. This role involves designing formal theoretical solutions and developing verification tools for ensuring secure third-party dependencies—a critical challenge in modern software security.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing novel formal theories for secure system analysis.
- Building rigorous software verification tools.
- Collaborating in a vibrant research environment, with opportunities to work with Google DeepMind.
- Contributing to explorative research while maintaining strong programming and tool-development skills.
The position is fixed-term (8 months, extendable), full-time (37 hours/week), and available for an immediate start.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
