Membrane-based Separations and Sustainability

Membrane-based separations are central to addressing major sustainability challenges, from securing critical metal supplies for the energy transition to enabling energy-efficient water treatment. Designing the next generation of these processes requires accurate thermodynamic models of concentrated brines, yet the activity and speciation of multi-ion aqueous solutions remain poorly characterised at high ionic strength. Direct experimental probes of ion solvation and ion pairing are needed to constrain these models and underpin rational membrane design and process optimisation.

Postdoctoral Research Associate Opportunity

The Department of Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CEB) at the University of Cambridge welcomes applications for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship project building experimentally grounded thermodynamic models of concentrated brines. The research uses terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) together with electrical conductivity and other physicochemical measurements to characterise ion solvation, hydration dynamics, and ion association across composition and temperature, and to parameterise improved excess Gibbs free energy models for multi-ion aqueous mixtures.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
