Hiring Unit

Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences

Position Summary

Conduct independent research on the hydrothermal mobility, transport, deposition, fractionation, and concentration of critical metals, with emphasis on rare earth elements and high-field-strength elements in natural ore-forming systems.

  • Design, execute, troubleshoot, and interpret high-temperature and high-pressure experiments using in situ spectroscopic, autoclave solubility, and cold-seal experimental techniques.
  • Develop thermodynamic models for critical-metal-bearing fluid–mineral systems and use these models to identify the mechanisms controlling metal mobilization, fractionation, and enrichment in hydrothermal environments.
  • Translate fundamental experimental and modelling results into applied concepts for cleaner hydrometallurgical extraction, separation, and concentration of critical metals.
  • Prepare peer-reviewed publications, technical reports, research proposals, presentations, and data packages; contribute to the scientific direction of the project and communicate results to academic, government, and industry collaborators.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to graduate students, research assistants, and technical staff in experimental design, laboratory safety, data analysis, and thermodynamic modelling.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrated peer-reviewed publication record in high-temperature experimental geochemistry, hydrothermal ore-forming systems, and/or critical-metal transport and deposition.
  • Advanced hands-on expertise with high-temperature and high-pressure experimental methods, including in situ spectroscopy, autoclave solubility experiments, and cold-seal pressure-vessel techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and apply thermodynamic models for fluid–mineral systems relevant to critical-metal mobility, fractionation, and concentration.
  • Experience developing applied research concepts related to hydrometallurgical extraction, separation, or concentration of rare earth elements or other critical metals.
  • Excellent English-language written and oral communication skills, including the ability to write scientific manuscripts, technical reports, proposals, and to communicate complex research results to multidisciplinary collaborators.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
