Research Associate - EICDT Legacy Project
This UKRI funded full-time post is available immediately on a fixed-term basis for 12 months. In line with the University’s fair employment for all principles, any further funding opportunities identified will be reviewed and discussed during the contract.
The starting salary will be from £34,610 on Grade E, depending on skills and experience.
The Role
The EICDT Research Associate will conduct analysis and writing up of the EICDT Legacy research project – a piece of work investigating CDT students’ approaches to working in an interdisciplinary environment, as well as the methodologies and ethical considerations across all PhD projects. The Research Associate will work closely with the Centre Directors, Centre Management team, and CDT students.
The UKRI College for Doctoral Training in Environmental Intelligence: Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Sustainable Futures (EICDT) develops the use of Data Science & AI alongside Social Sciences to create transformational science and tools to enable informed decision making across a range of sectors related to the environment, including climate, water, energy, finance and insurance, infrastructure and health. The rapidly growing availability of data from multiple, inter-related sources, provides the opportunity for a step-change in our ability to find solutions to important challenges related to our interaction with the natural environment.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The CDT has provided an inter-disciplinary training environment for over 50 students across 5 cohorts since September 2019, plus an affiliated 6th Cohort in 2024. Students are being equipped with the skills to become tomorrows’ leaders in Environmental Intelligence, and with career prospects across academia and the public and private sectors. It is a crucial and exciting time in the life-cycle of the CDT and assessing the progress and outputs of our students’ research is critical to the continued development of this emerging research agenda.
