About the Role
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral research position within the condensed matter physics group in the School of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Manchester.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant research team, renowned for pioneering 2D materials research since the discovery of graphene in 2004. The role involves collaborating on projects focused on graphene and other 2D materials, supported by EPSRC and international funders.
Position Description
The position is available immediately for a term of up to 24 months. The core focus will be investigating molecular and ionic transport through capillaries constructed from 2D materials and heterostructures, aiming to advance technological applications in 2D materials devices.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct research on ionic conductance and molecular permeation in 2D materials structures
- Fabricate and characterise heterostructures from 2D materials
- Perform sensitive electrical and electrochemical measurements
- Utilise high-resolution optical microscopy, spectroscopy, and precision electrical testing
- Publish findings in internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals

Requirements
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- A PhD in experimental physics, condensed matter physics, chemistry, or materials science
- Demonstrated expertise in ionic conductance/molecular permeation experiments
- Proven ability to fabricate heterostructures from 2D materials
- Strong background in device fabrication with 2D materials
- Proficiency in electrical/electrochemical measurement techniques
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of chemical reactions under confinement
- Experience with precision electronics and high-resolution microscopy/spectroscopy
- Excellent technical proficiency in fabrication and characterisation facilities
- Strong organisational, self-motivation, and communication skills
- Peer-reviewed publication record
