About the Position
The International Centre for Future Health Systems and School of Built Environment at UNSW Sydney seek a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to advance research into the intersection of the built environment and health systems.
Our workspaces, communities, medical facilities, and housing systems impact mental health, respiratory conditions, cardiovascular disease, trauma, and social inclusion. The built environment must urgently integrate with health promotion, policy, and sustainability to build culturally safe, equitable, and climate-resilient buildings.
This role combines research in architecture, design science, and health systems to guide policy, practice, and future health delivery.

Key Focus:
- Understand and influence the impact of building design, healthcare facility layout, and social infrastructure on health outcomes
- Drive policymaking, evidence-based practice, and intersectoral collaboration in health and environmental research
- Strengthen interdisciplinary teamwork across UNSW faculties

Key Responsibilities
- Conduct analytical and evaluative research on the built environment’s role within future health systems.
- Publish accreditation-based research in peer-reviewed journals and contribute to high-impact symposia.
- Collaborate with partner institutions, industry advocates, community stakeholders, and policymakers to translate research findings into actionable strategies.
- Mentor HDR students, junior researchers, and interdisciplinary research teams.
- Develop and present proposals for grants, policy partnerships, and community engagement projects.
- Work closely with international partner institutions to strengthen collaborative research networks.

Requirements & Selection Criteria
Academic & Professional Qualifications
- A doctoral degree (PhD) in:
- Built environment-based disciplines (architecture, architectural engineering, construction, urban planning)
- Healthcare-related fields (medicine, public health, health systems)
- Post-doctoral research experience equivalent to at least 0.5 FTE years, or doc torial enrolment noted on degree certificate (except where supplied evidence exists that special research projects form a requirement of the PhD.)
- Demonstrated capacity to challenge disciplinary boundaries through cross-sectoral research.
- Commitment to closing gap analyses in built environment-health research, such as approval, adaptability, and accessibility in policy sectors.
Key Competencies Demonstrated
- Research excellence:
- Ability to undertake independent, high-quality research, working with limited supervision.
- Leadership & collaboration:
- Evidence of led research teams, meshed across academic and community contexts.
- Publication record:
- Proven track record of high-impact journal articles, book chapters, and peer-reviewed presentations at international/minor conferences.
- ICT & data science skills:
- Ability to analyze and visualize complex datasets, utilising software such as GIS, ArcGIS, or statistical modelling programs.
- Engagement with professional development:
- Willingness to stay at the forefront of emerging trends in health systems and built environment processes.
- English language communication:
- Ability to write, speak, and engage effectively in academic and public forums.
