About Byohm

Byohm, the trading name for Wastewater Fuels Ltd, is a UK-based clean technology company pioneering next-generation wastewater treatment and renewable energy systems. Founded in 2021 and based in Coventry, West Midlands, we develop bio-electrochemical systems (BES) that convert wastewater into treated water and renewable fuels.

Job Overview

We seek a highly motivated Research Chemist / Chemical Engineer to support the development, optimisation, and scale-up of:

  • Microbial Electrochemical Cell – Anaerobic Digestion (MEC-AD) systems
  • Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs)

The ideal candidate will:

  • Excel in electrochemistry, anaerobic digestion, and applied research -Apply their expertise to scalable technologies for wastewater treatment, renewable energy, and resource recovery.

Key Responsibilities

Research & Development

  • Support lab-to-pilot-to-scale development of bio-electrochemical systems.
  • Design, test, and optimise anaerobic digestion and microbial electrochemical systems using tools like AutoCAD, SolidWorks.

Process Design & Engineering

  • Assist in process design, reactor configuration, materials selection, and system integration.
  • Conduct technical analysis of system performance, including:
    • Biogas production & methane yield
    • COD removal, volatile fatty acids
    • pH, alkalinity, nutrient balance
    • Electrochemical performance

Scale-Up & Validation

  • Develop experimental plans and operating procedures.
  • Support scale-up studies, including:
    • Mass & energy balances
    • Hydraulic & mixing considerations
    • Process control requirements

Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing

  • Work with multidisciplinary teams (microbiologists, electrochemists, process engineers).
  • Review scientific literature for system optimisations.
  • Communicate progress with internal & external stakeholders (grant applications, proposals, publications).

Essential Requirements

  • A Master’s degree or higher in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience in:
    • Designing, operating, or analysing laboratory/pilot-scale bioreactors.
    • Process engineering (mass transfer, reaction kinetics, heat/mass balances).
    • Microbial electrochemical systems (e.g., Microbial Fuel Cells, Bio-Electrochemical Reactors).
    • Data interpretation and technical reporting.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving, laboratory safety, and UK driving licence.
  • Collaborative teamwork, independent research, and sustainable tech passion.

Desirable (Not Mandatory) Skills

✔ Electrochemistry expertise (electrode materials, cyclic voltammetry, impedance analysis). ✔ Microbiology knowledge (anaerobic microbes, methanogens, biofilms, syntrophic interactions). ✔ CFD experience (reactor design, mixing, fluid dynamics, mass transfer). ✔ Pilot-plant & small-scale demo projects experience. ✔ Wastewater treatment / renewable energy systems familiarity. ✔ Technical report, grant proposal, or patent documentation preparation.
