Details of the role

The Research Fellow (Biostatistician) is expected to carry out independent and/or team research and develop their research expertise. The position holder’s primary obligation is the statistical analysis of national linked health and clinical datasets in collaboration with investigators and stakeholders. They will be responsible for the design, documentation, analysis and reporting of Kirby Institute projects. The projects include HIV prevention including pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and cervical disease prevention including HPV vaccination and screening.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to high-impact public health research using large-scale, complex datasets. You will apply advanced statistical techniques to inform critical work in HIV and cervical disease prevention, collaborating with leading researchers and stakeholders. The position combines technical excellence with real-world impact, allowing you to design studies, develop analysis plans, and communicate findings that shape policy and practice. You will work both independently and within multidisciplinary teams, contributing to innovative projects while building your research profile and advancing your expertise in biostatistics and population health.

The role of Research Fellow (Biostatistician) reports to Associate Professor Benjamin Bavinton and has no direct reports.

Some Key Skills Required As a Level A

A PhD in statistics, public health, epidemiology or a related discipline High level skills in relevant statistical packages including Stata, R, SAS, PySpark and Python Previous experience in the management and analysis of linked health data, the production of statistical analysis plans and the use of GitHub Demonstrated ability to undertake high quality academic research and conduct independent research with limited supervision Proven track record of publications and conference presentations relative to opportunity Develop and execute advanced data management and statistical analysis methods on large scale linked registry, clinical and administrative datasets Draft and finalise study concept sheets, statistical analysis plans, code, data visualisations, scientific manuscripts and reports Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines, and build effective relationships

Some key skills required as a Level B include the above and:

Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high impact with clear evidence of ability to achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership Participate as a chief investigator in competitive grant applications or show evidence of active participation in research collaborations funded by competitive grants Design research projects Mentor and guide students and colleagues and develop the next generation of academics through involvement in the supervision of HDRs (as per the norms of the discipline)
