About the Role
The School of Ocean and Earth Science at the University of Southampton is seeking to recruit a Research Fellow in Phanerozoic Ocean Biogeochemistry and Earth System Evolution.
The successful applicant will work on the development and application of the cGENIE Earth system model for the NERC Pushing the Frontiers project: “Determining extinction correlates on geological timescales”.
This project is led by:
- Dr. Richard Stockey at the University of Southampton
- Prof. Erin Saupe at the University of Oxford (Project Lead)
- Prof. Ben Mills at the University of Leeds (Project Co-Lead)
Key Responsibilities
- Develop reconstructive models of 3D ocean biogeochemistry spanning the Phanerozoic (last ~540 million years).
- Explore uncertainty in three-dimensional ocean biogeochemistry across this timeframe and its implications for geochemical proxy records and marine ecosystems.
- Work closely with project collaborators at the University of Oxford and the University of Leeds.

Position Description
This is a specialist, short-term position (15-month fixed-term contract). Applicants should:
- Have prior experience in intermediate complexity Earth system modelling, or experience integrating key components of Earth system evolution on comparable timescales.
- Possess a strong track record in computational Earth Science research, or a demonstrated ability to acquire and deploy new skills effectively.
Requirements
- Hold, or be nearing completion of, a PhD/DPhil in an appropriate scientific discipline.
- Demonstrate relevant research experience, including:
- Capability to work independently within research projects.
- Ability to manage personal research activities and contribute to academic publications.
- Strong communication skills, including:
- Clarity in presenting research ideas and findings.
- Representation of the research group in meetings and collaborative discussions.
