Research Fellow - Integrating Citizen Deliberation for Impact (i4i) project
Research Fellow (i4i Project) – Qualitative Comparative Analysis
The University of Southampton is seeking applications for a Research Fellow position within the Integrating Citizen Deliberation for Impact (i4i) project. This international initiative explores how European climate assemblies engage with different political-administrative systems, their resultant impacts on policy and polity, and the implications for democratic processes.
About the Role
This fixed-term (one year), full-time position will contribute to a multi-country collaboration uniting:
- The Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Southampton
- Researchers across the UK, Belgium, Germany, and Poland
You will work under the supervision of Dr Rikki Dean, the principal investigator of this interdisciplinary project.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop overarching conceptual frameworks for integrating findings across the project’s work packages
- Conduct a QuQualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) of European climate assemblies, examining how they interact with political systems and yield policy impacts
- Author peer-reviewed academic output on:
- Democratic innovation models
- Public participation mechanisms
- Nexus between citizen deliberation and governance
- Present empirical findings through empirical analysis
- Engage collaboratively with international project teams to ensure cohesive research output

About the i4i Project
This research focuses on nationwide and subnational climate assemblies in Europe, investigating:
- Varied integration with administrative and political systems
- Differences and shapes in polity, policy, and political impacts
Resulting outcomes will inform theoretical and practical discourses on democratic inclusion and environmental governance.
Requirements
Essential Criteria
- Doctoral degree (PhD) or equivalent professional qualifications in a relevant discipline, such as political science, public administration, sociology, democratic theory, or related fields
- Strong theoretical grounding to construct coherent analytical frameworks
- Qualitative research skills, ideally:
- Familiarity with Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA)
- Experience with mixed-method approaches
- Self-directed work ethic: fluency in independent and team-based research planning, execution, and communication
- Academic publishing experience: ability to prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, including:
- Research reports, papers, and conference abstracts
- Evidence of originality in addressing gaps within democratic innovations research
Desirable Criteria
- Prior involvement with citizen assemblies, deliberative democracy, or civic participation research
- Expertise in empirical QCA: programming (e.g., fsQCA) or previous applications in policy analysis
- International collaboration experience or phases of research in multilateral projects
