Research Fellow - Safe AI
Call for Research Fellows Application
KRI invites applications for Research Fellows focused on safe and reliable AI for mission-critical systems, with a special emphasis on:
- Space AI and autonomous operations
- Onboard autonomy for autonomous systems
- Runtime safeguards for high-consequence applications
- Human oversight of AI decision-making
- Evaluation methodologies in mission-critical environments
About the Role
This is a voluntary, unpaid research affiliation ideal for:
- Researchers, engineers, PhD students
- Independent scholars
- Practitioners seeking to develop a focused research proposal with KRI.
Fellows may either propose their own research topic or collaborate with KRI to refine a direction. Successful proposals should blend phenomenal work with research output, such as:
- A small prototype, codebase, or dataset analysis
- Evaluation methods or technical experiments
- Publication-ready work (e.g., short paper, framework, or public briefing)

Project Scope & Flexibility
- Duration: Projects typically range 6–12 weeks, scoped to the Fellow’s availability.
- Format: Fully remote and flexible; no fixed hours required.
- Location Preference: UK-based applicants given priority, though remote applicants will be considered where there is strong alignment.
