Research Nurse (Band 5) – Respiratory Research Team

Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for a motivated Band 5 nurse to join the Research Team, with an initial focus on respiratory studies. Future opportunities may extend across other specialist teams, including Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Hepatology, Gastroenterology (GI), and Cancer Research.
This role enables you to contribute to innovative, patient-centred research, supporting cutting-edge treatments for conditions such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and acute respiratory infections. Your work will advance clinical practice standards and improve patient outcomes, while fostering a research environment that embeds studies within routine care.
About the Team
The Research Team is a multidisciplinary, collaborative group working across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings. You’ll support both commercial and non-commercial studies, partnering with the NIHR Clinical Research Facility and specialist research delivery teams.

Main Responsibilities
As a Research Nurse in the Respiratory Team, your key duties include:
- Supporting the delivery of respiratory research studies from setup to close-out
- Recruiting, consenting, and following up patients in clinical trials
- Conducting clinical assessments and collecting high-quality research data
- Operating across wards, clinics, and community environments
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and effective research delivery
- Contributing to patient-centred research care and maintaining high standards

Previous Research Experience
- Not essential – training will be provided via dedicated research education programmes
- Full induction and ongoing support will be given
Ideal applicants have:
- A strong clinical background and a passion for learning
- Experience working in NHS or healthcare settings
- interest in respiratory care/research (we encourage discussions for tailored advice)

Essential Criteria
Qualifications & Experience
- Registered Adult Nurse (NMC registration)
- Post-registration clinical experience (including placements/ Band 5 practice)
- Experience in NHS or healthcare healthcare environments
- Communication skills (written and verbal)
- Self-directed organisation, independence, and teamwork
- Basic IT skills (e.g., Microsoft Office, clinical databases)
Professional Competencies
- commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and governance
- Logical work/training history consistent with research requirements
- Willingness to undertake research training (ICH-GCP)

Desirable Criteria
Experience Advantages
- Respiratory clinical setting experience
- Exposure to clinical research/audits/QI projects
- Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or research governance
- Supporting students/junior colleagues
- Patient education and communication skill
Technical Skills
- Competency in cannulation and venepuncture
- Management experience in challenging settings
