Job Overview
University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to join its Research Team, with an initial focus on Respiratory studies. While based in Respiratory Research, this role may extend across other specialities, including Ophthalmology, Cardiology, Dermatology, Neurology, Hepatology, and Gastroenterology, providing a diverse and flexible research environment aligned with patient-centred care.
This clinical role supports advanced research aimed at improving clinical practice and treatment standards—both locally and nationally—ensuring equitable access to studies within routine care.
About the Team
The Research Team is a multidisciplinary, collaborative group embedded within UHS’ Research & Development workforce. They work alongside respiratory clinicians, allied health professionals, and external partners to deliver high-quality research across inpatient, outpatient, and community settings.
The broader trust facilitates both commercial and non-commercial studies, partnering with the NIHR Clinical Research Facility and other specialist delivery teams. This fosters professional growth, learning, and cross-specialty experience in clinical research.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Core Job Duties
As a Research Nurse (Band 5) in the Respiratory Team, your primary responsibilities include:
- Supporting the delivery of respiratory research studies, from set-up to close-out across conditions such as asthma, COPD, interstitial lung disease, and acute respiratory infections.
- Recruiting, consenting, and following up patients in clinical trials.
- Conducting clinical assessments to collect high-quality research data.
- Operating across wards, clinics, and community environments.
- Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe, effective study delivery.
- Contributing to patient-cent.red research care standards.

What We Are Looking For
Essential Criteria
Applicants will demonstrate:
✔ Registered Adult Nurse with current NHS/NMC registration.
✔ Evidence of post-registration clinical experience (including placements, Band 5 practice, or equivalent).
✔ Experience in an NHS or healthcare setting.
✔ Interest in respiratory care or clinical research.
✔ Strong communication skills (written and verbal).
✔ Ability to organise workloads independently and collaboratively.
✔ Basic IT skills (e.g., electronic medical records, data entry, Microsoft Office).
✔ Understanding of patient safety, confidentiality, and governance.
✔ Willingness to undertake research training, including ICH-GCP certification.
Desirable Criteria
Ideal candidates may also have:
✅ Experience in respiratory clinical settings (e.g., wards, clinics). ✅ Exposure to clinical research (e.g., trials, audits, QI projects). ✅ Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) or research governance. ✅ Experience in patient education or mentoring (students/colleagues). ✅ Venepuncture and cannulation skills.

Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Experience
- Registered Nurse/Statutory Registered Allied Health Professional (NMC/HCPC).
- Ongoing professional development.
- Post-registration experience in a relevant clinical speciality.
- Recent NHS experience (or equivalent).
- Understanding of personal accountability.
- Evidence of teaching/supporting learners in practice.
Desirable Skills
- ICH-GCP certification.
- Clinical research experience (e.g., trial coordination).
- Ward/department management experience.
- Knowledge of UK Policy Framework for Health & Social Care, ICH-GCP.
- Experience as an NMC sign-off mentor.
