Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

Working closely with the Moorfields Eye Hospital and UCL study team, the post holder will be responsible for:

• Liaising with Local PIs (Toosy; Jayaram) and the NIHR Clinical Research Facility to arrange screening assessment. Following-up in writing (email or letter) as required. Liaising with the research participant and carer to assess any specific requirements e.g. wheelchair access.
• Downloading and printing patient documentation prior to a visit (information sheets and consent forms).
• Meeting research participants at Moorfields Eye Hospital and escorting them as required.
• Troubleshooting when things don’t go to plan (for example disruption to travel arrangements or the unexpected un-availability of researchers or facilities).
• Dealing with participant issues/concerns in a sympathetic manner and escalating where required.
• Ensuring issues or concerns (e.g. participant welfare) are reported to the appropriate researcher/investigator, flagging feedback from participants following previous visits, or any other information that will improve the experience of participants when attending research visits.
• Electronic data entry following research visits which may include:
  • Inputting and maintaining study patient data.
  • Provision of quality control of data in the study.
  • Completing reports intermittently on study recruitment status and whether all data for study participants is present or not.
• Testing participants at research visits which includes:
  • Following appropriate training, testing of participants using the Graded Incomplete Letters Test (GILT).
  • Testing of participants using standard tests of visual function.
  • Analysis of test, clinical, and biomarker data from the study.
• Developing interviews and surveys regarding experience of cortical visual testing and relevant pathways (e.g. Integrated Care Pathway between Moorfields Eye Hospital and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery).

Teaching, Research and Development

• Provision of teaching on topics related to the post holder’s work as requested by the line manager.
• Contributing to the department’s multidisciplinary research projects within the strategy.
• There may be opportunities to assist in the preparation and analysis of data for publications for dissemination of research and for presentation at international conferences as well as internal meetings at Moorfields Eye Hospital, UCL, and meetings with external collaborators.

General Duties

• Ensuring the highest standard of record keeping, maintaining accurate, complete, and up to date records.
• Ensuring confidentiality is maintained as applicable.
• Attending and contributing to Departmental, Institutional, and other meetings as appropriate.
• Acting at all times in accordance with the highest professional standards and ensuring that these are maintained in the delivery of all aspects of research.
• Ensuring that duties are carried out in a resource efficient way, and actively support Moorfields Eye Hospital’s green plan, policies, and objectives.
• Adhering at all times to the policies, rules and regulations of the Department, Institute and Moorfields Eye Hospital.

Person specification

Education / Qualifications

Essential criteria

• Registered with the General Optical Council.

Desirable criteria

• Member of the College of Optometrists.
• Post-graduate degree with substantial research component (e.g., MSc, MPhil).

Experience

Essential criteria

• Experience assessing visual function in patients with visual impairment.
• Broad understanding of the developing roles of the ophthalmic professions, within primary secondary & tertiary care.

Desirable criteria

• Previous experience conducting patient or professional interviews, questionnaire-based and/or service evaluation/improvement projects.

Knowledge

Essential criteria

• Knowledge of the central role research plays in patient care in NHS.

Desirable criteria

• Further training in research methods (e.g., statistical analysis and / or qualitative (thematic) analysis.
