Key Responsibilities and Skills
You will have:
- A PhD in a relevant field (e.g. solid-state physics, electronics, photonics, semiconductor materials).
- Practical experience in microfabrication processes and working in a cleanroom environment.
- Expertise in the design, fabrication, and characterisation of microsystems and nanodevices.
- Strong track record of research outputs and/or industrial R&D contributions.

About the School or About the Department
The Northern Engineering and Robotics Innovation Centre (NERIC) based in the University of Salford brings together academia, industry, and public-sector partners to accelerate innovation and business growth in Advanced Manufacturing and Advanced Materials. Originally established around robotics and automation, NERIC has evolved into a broader innovation hub with expertise spanning robotics, automation, digital manufacturing, metrology, microfabrication, photonics, microsystems, semiconductor technologies, and advanced materials. Its activities are aligned with Greater Manchester’s Industrial Strategy priorities and focus on supporting SMEs and industrial partners through applied research, technology adoption, prototyping, testing, and knowledge exchange. NERIC’s Advanced Manufacturing portfolio includes robotic integration, automation, and manufacturing process optimisation, while its Advanced Materials activities encompass microelectronics, photonics, sensors, semiconductor materials, nanotechnology, and microsystems engineering. The recent establishment of a dedicated microfabrication cleanroom has further expanded NERIC’s capabilities, enabling the development of novel devices, prototypes, and demonstrators while supporting research, training, and commercial innovation activities across the region.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
