About the Role

This multi-functional Research Specialist position housed within the Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, provides support to the Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Program (WSPCP).

Established in 1913, the WSPCP inspects and certifies Wisconsin seed potatoes, ensuring healthy planting stock for potato farmers. The role focuses on supporting the tissue culture and diagnostic laboratories while offering opportunities to engage across the program's numerous facets:

  • Certification processes
  • Early-generation seed production
  • Research advancement
  • Outreach activities

This agriculturally-oriented laboratory position requires flexible working hours, including:

  • Extended hours during peak potato production and diagnostic periods
  • Travel within and outside Wisconsin as needed
  • Occasional nights and weekends
  • Longer driving periods as part of duties

The Department of Plant Pathology served by this position is represented by the WSPCP.

Key Responsibilities

The Research Specialist will:

  • Maintain and document Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) while ensuring compliance with existing policies and procedures.

  • Conduct novel pathogen testing on seed potato samples.

  • Develop, interpret, and implement research methodologies and materials based on program needs.

  • Conduct molecular assays, including:

    • ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay)
    • Conventional PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
    • Immunocapture-based tests
    • Real-time PCR (if applicable)
    • RNA and/or DNA extraction
  • Operate, clean, and maintain research equipment and laboratory areas.

  • Perform inventory tracking and order replenishments.

  • Collect and analyze data while documenting results for presentations and reports to internal and external stakeholders.

  • Provide technical guidance and support to program staff, student workers, and team members.

  • Perform research experiments with moderate project impact, collecting and monitoring data.

Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Molecular diagnostic experience focusing on:
    • Familiarity with ELISA methods
    • Conventional PCR and real-time PCR protocols
    • Immunocapture assays
    • RNA and DNA extraction techniques
  • Core laboratory skills, including:
    • Following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
    • Measuring and preparing media
    • Using a pH meter for solutions
    • Pipetting techniques
    • Sterile technique applications
  • A valid U.S. driver's license
  • Compliance with University of Wisconsin Risk Management standards for equipment/driving.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in micropropagation of potato or related crops.
  • Knowledge of research experimental design and implementation.
  • Proficiency in managing cloud-based databases.
  • Creating websites or designing digital surveys.
  • Conducting data analysis or statistical testing.

Educational Background

A Bachelor's Degree or higher in a related field is strongly encouraged, particularly in:

  • Plant pathology
  • Bacteriology
  • Agronomy or plant science
  • Horticulture
  • Plant breeding
