About the Role
The Fibrosis Research Group at Newcastle University is seeking a talented Research Technician to support a Cancer Research UK funded project exploring the tumour immune microenvironment in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
The project investigates how metabolic stress and hypoxia reprogramme cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) to drive immune suppression and immunotherapy resistance in HCC—the third leading cause of cancer-related death globally.
The successful candidate will participate in cutting-edge research using pre-clinical human and mouse models, spatial and single-cell technologies, to uncover CAF-driven tumour microenvironment mechanisms and develop novel immunotherapeutic strategies for liver cancer.
Key Responsibilities
The role will involve:
-
Supporting laboratory operations across multiple disciplines, including:
- Maintenance of mouse colonies
- Tissue processing and molecular/cellular biology
- Flow cytometry
- Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and immunofluorescence (IF)
- Spatial profiling studies
- Reagent preparation, stock management, and ensuring compliance with biosafety and animal welfare regulations
-
Core tasks and responsibilities:
- Managing human and mouse model experiments (initially supervised, then independently)
- Maintaining accurate laboratory records, safety documentation, and compliance data
- Collaborating with suppliers on problem resolution and equipment upgrades
- Supporting library administration, equipment management, and cross-laboratory coordination
- Presenting results to academic leads and research teams
- Overseeing laboratory compliance, training induction, and safety development
- Ensuring colonial and facilities maintenance, alongside research and teaching support

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
