Research Technician (Cancer Research) – £29,588.00 per annum
Closing Date: 29 July 2026
About the Role
The Newcastle Fibrosis Research Group is seeking a talented Research Technician to support a Cancer Research UK-funded project exploring the tumour immune microenvironment in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).
Based within the Faculty of Medical Sciences, this role will integrate with a multidisciplinary technical team under the oversight of a technical manager.
The research assesses how metabolic stress and hypoxia reprogram cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), driving immune suppression and immunotherapy resistance in HCC—the world’s third leading cause of cancer-related death. Using advanced human and mouse pre-clinical models, alongside spatial and single-cell technologies, the project aims to:
- Define how CAFs influence the tumour microenvironment.
- Identify novel therapeutic strategies to enhance immunotherapy responses in liver cancer.
The technician will oversee key operational and scientific tasks, including:
- Maintenance of mouse colonies.
- Tissue processing, molecular/cellular biology techniques, and flow cytometry.
- Immunohistochemistry/immunofluorescence and support for spatial profiling studies.
- Laboratory administration—reagent preparation, compliance, stock management.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
