Boarding House Parent

Location: Claremont Boarding Line Manager: Director of Boarding

Role Context

The Boarding House Parent holds a central role in Claremont Boarding. They care for boarders in day-to-day life in the way parents would, ensuring students are happy, safe, smartly dressed, and ready for learning.

This role is crucial to maintaining our current "outstanding" Ofsted ranking and aiming to position Claremont Boarding as the destination of choice in the local area.

A team of resident Boarding House Parents operates the boarding house under a system of shifts, with each working 40 hours a week, over 39 weeks a year.


Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Compliance

  • Stay informed about the National Minimum Standards for Boarding Schools and follow the principles outlined in the Claremont Boarding Management Handbook in day-to-day boarder care.
  • Be aware of Fire Safety and Health & Safety procedures and contribute to ensuring a safe environment for staff and students.
  • Follow safeguarding procedures, including compliance with MyConcern.
  • Adhere to staff rotas devised by House Leads to ensure compliant staff allocation.
  • Attend all weekly House staff meetings and any required boarding insets.
  • Participate in stipulated staff training.

Operational Role in the Boarding House

  • Guide boarders through their daily routines.
  • Support new boarder inductions and assist with reintegration after term breaks.
  • Promote social life and communal activities in evenings and weekends, contributing meaningfully to House life.
  • Assist in planning weekly house trips.
  • Help students with homework, organisational skills, and academic planning.
  • Monitor and ensure safe, healthy accommodation conducive to good mental wellbeing.
  • Support boarders in transitioning to independence.
  • Assist with laundry management and systems.
  • Read and contribute to the Boarding Daily Log to inform other staff.
  • Take accurate registers during student supervision.
  • Collaborate with catering staff to ensure healthy meals and polite table manners.
  • Ensure laundry distribution and returns by students/boarders.
  • Escalate behavioural issues to House Leads to foster a kind, orderly atmosphere.
  • Oversee safe use of ICT by boarders as directed by House Leads.
  • Serve as a positive role model for students.
  • Report any concerns directly to House Leads.

Boarding House Parents will also hold emergency phone duty and issue boarders’ medication (rotating basis).

Other Responsibilities

  • Comply with additional reasonable duties assigned by the Principal or Director of Boarding.
