About the Role
The Resident Medical Officer is a pivotal member of the Private Care clinical team, providing continuous on-site medical cover across private maternity services, including inpatient wards, theatres, outpatient areas, and associated clinical settings.
Working within a consultant-led model of care, the RMO acts as the first-line medical responder, delivering prompt clinical assessment, intervention, stabilisation, and escalation to ensure the highest standards of patient safety, quality, and patient experience.
The role is central to supporting the safe and effective management of maternity patients throughout their care journey, maintaining continuity of care, responding to urgent clinical situations, and supporting the timely implementation of consultant-led treatment plans. The RMO works closely with consultants, midwives, nursing teams, anaesthetists, paediatricians, and other multidisciplinary colleagues to coordinate care, facilitate communication, and ensure that clinical concerns are identified and addressed promptly.
A key feature of the Private Care model is the RMO’s responsibility for acting as a clinical interface between private maternity services and the wider private care services. This includes supporting seamless care pathways, coordinating transfers and escalation to higher-acuity services when required, and ensuring effective communication during shared-care episodes.

Responsibilities
The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) is responsible for providing continuous on-site medical support across Chelsea Private Care services, ensuring the delivery of safe, responsive, and high-quality patient care within a consultant-led environment. The postholder provides first-line medical assessment and intervention for inpatients, supports the implementation of consultant management plans, and plays a key role in maintaining continuity of care and patient safety.
The RMO provides comprehensive clinical care across inpatient wards, theatres, outpatient areas, and associated private clinical settings. Responsibilities include:
- Conducting clinical assessments
- Reviewing and managing urgent admissions
- Supporting routine and emergency maternity care
- Undertaking ward rounds
- Monitoring post-operative patients
- Assisting consultants during procedures and theatre cases
The postholder is expected to respond promptly to clinical deterioration, obstetric emergencies, postpartum complications, and other urgent situations, initiating appropriate treatment, stabilisation, and escalation where required.
