Resident Medical Officer – Cygnet Hospital Colchester

We are seeking an enthusiastic Resident Medical Officer for a one-year-fixed term contract at Cygnet Hospital Colchester.

The Role

You’ll play a vital part in providing emergency (on-call) and day shift medical cover across our 59-bed specialist rehabilitation service for men with:

  • Learning disabilities
  • Autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
  • Mental health needs

Key Responsibilities (in addition to other duties as required)

  • Cover 3 non-residential on-calls per week:
    • Weekday evenings (5:00 PM – 9:00 AM)
    • Weekend day shifts (9:00 AM – 9:00 PM)
  • Provide 5-day weekday shifts (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
    • Acute outreach, crisis care, and ward cover
    • Respond to service needs across specialist mental health settings
  • Carry out core acute psychiatric mental healthcare assessments and interventions:
    • ECGs
    • Blood tests
    • Nasogastric tube (NG) tubing
    • Patient admissions & mental health assessments
    • Risk assessments
    • Patient clinical assessments

Core Requirements

  • Fully registered with the GMC (MBBS or equivalent entry route)
  • Sound psychiatric medicine fundamentals
    • Knowledge of legal grounds and communication skills
  • Real-world experience in UK acute inpatient mental health settings
  • Confident in acute on-call clinical decision-making
    • Ability to identify risks & when to escalate
  • Must work well as part of a multidisciplinary team
    • Liaison with nurses, OTs, psychologists, psychiatry cover team
  • Clean, clear and detailed documentation
    • Accurate and traceable notes for clinical and service planning
  • On-going commitment to CPD (tracing refresher training)
