About The Role
A day in the life of a Residential Childcare Worker
Whilst every day brings an opportunity to shape our children’s lives for the better, no one day is ever the same. Some days you will enjoy making fabulous memories with our children; supporting them to get up, be educated, eat well, engage positively in their communities, attend appointments and enjoy fun activities. Other days may be more challenging.
Our children’s complexities mean that they may face physical disability, illness, emotional and mental health struggles, present behaviour that may challenge you, and struggle to communicate with and understand the world around them. These are the days that require your resilience and commitment, but they’re also the days that lead to the greatest sense of achievement. When a child is experiencing physical or emotional pain or difficulty, your support means everything to them and it is what inevitably means that they end their day feeling happier, loved, and safe.

- Contribute to the children and young people’s care plans.
- Undertake keyworker responsibilities as required including preparing for and attending statutory reviews and meetings.
- Attend and complete all training as required within the requisite timescales.
- Work towards completing your Level 4 Children, Young People and Families Practitioner and complete this within 2 years of commencing your employment with us.
- Keep your senior team up to date of any Safeguarding issues as they occur.
- Use the provided Reporting and Recording systems to keep timely, clear and accurate records of your and our children’s daily activities.
- Understand the 9 Quality Standards and use this knowledge to underpin your daily practise.
- To uphold a culturally inclusive ethos which actively values and promotes diversity, unity and community cohesion.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
