Residential Childcare Practitioner

Location: Thornhill, Dumfries and Galloway

Salary: From £34,976 to £37,447 OTE, plus overtime at time and a half

About the Role

You will work within a unique, dedicated team to deliver exceptional practice whilst shaping the growth of our service.

Key Factors:

  • Shift Pattern: Rotating shifts of 14 hours followed by a 10-hour sleepover, resulting in a 2 days on, 3 days off pattern.
  • Purpose: Support children and young people from varied backgrounds who have experienced trauma or adverse life circumstances. They require specialist therapeutic care in a small, residential setting.

The ideal team member will be:

  • Passionate about providing a safe, caring environment where young people can thrive and achieve success.

Requirements

Essential Criteria:

  • Previous experience working in a residential children’s home or relevant experience.
  • Certification/Ability: Possession of, or readiness to obtain, SVQ 3 in Social Care and/or HNC in Social-Action or similar.
  • Communication & Collaboration: Excellent in verbal/written communication and adept in teamwork.
  • Safeguarding: Understanding of safeguarding/child protection protocols.
  • Shiftwork Flexibility: Willingness to work shift patterns, including evenings, weekends, sleepovers, and long hours.
  • Driving: Must hold a full UK manual driving licence and be confident driving (car insurance for agency work provided, excluding drivers aged under 21).

Additional Skills/Qualities:

  • Understanding of Child/Young Person Behaviours:
    • Aware of conscious/unconscious behaviours and skilled in intervention strategies.
    • Experience or willingness to train in crisis and physical intervention.
  • Legal Knowledge: Familiarity with relevant legislation.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Provide specialist childcare support under set policies and procedures, adhering to a collaborative, therapeutic ethos.
  • Contribute to assessments of young people’s needs and support programming.
  • Attend planning/review meetings, coordinating a key person system approach.
  • Maintain accurate record-keeping in line with legal/regulatory standards.
  • Act within a shift/sleepover system, ensuring 24/7 coverage.
  • Perform routine health & safety/security checks.
  • Engage in continuous professional development, with access to mandatory crisis management training and training opportunities.

  • Promote structure, boundaries, and positive routines.
  • Adhere to the SSSC Code of Conduct.
  • Mitigate risk through safeguarding/child protection awareness, including clear reporting mechanisms.
  • Foster a clean, hygienic environment.
  • Demonstrate professional conduct, consistency, and adherence to Greenleaf Policies & Procedures.
