Residential Childcare Support Worker

Support Worker – Residential Childcare (Role Based in Camden, Greater London)

Overview

Salary:

  • Unqualified: £30,277.23 to £31,208.49 on successful completion of probation
  • Qualified: £31,867.18 (for those holding, or committed to completing, a Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare or equivalent)
  • Location: Greater London (covering Camden, Haringey & Islington residential homes)
  • Contract Type: Permanent
  • Hours: 12-hour shifts (08:00–20:00)
    • Weekly rota:
      • Week 1: Wednesday & Thursday (24 hrs)
      • Week 2: Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday (60 hrs)
    • Guaranteed minimum 168 hrs/month, with waking night contracts available
  • Annual Leave: 236 hrs initially (increasing by 12 hrs/year → up to 272 hrs after 3 years)
  • Perks: Fully funded enrolment onto required qualifications, mandatory training, pension scheme (post-qualifying period)

Area Camden, part of the Polaris Community, provides high-quality residential childcare for young people aged 11–18, built on principles of respect, dignity, choice and positive parenting.

As a Support Worker, your role is to:

  • Ensure young people’s safety and wellbeing.
  • Build positive relationships, supporting emotional, social, and academic growth.
  • Promote confidence, independence and meaningful community engagement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Create a safe and nurturing environment, fostering each young person’s development.
  • Provide emotional and social support, helping them build relationships and engage in local activities.
  • Deliver individualised plans, assessing and reviewing care plans in collaboration with managers.
  • Maintain accurate records (daily updates, safeguarding, health & safety compliance).
  • Support daily living needs and household management (meal planning, shopping, chores).
  • Work collaboratively with teams, external professionals, and supervise family visits when required.

Essential Requirements

✔ Proven experience in the care/residential childcare sector (preferred). ✔ Ability to build trusting relationships with young people and embed positive parenting practices. ✔ Patience, empathy, and conflict resolution skills – sensitivity and proactiveness when engaging with young people. ✔ Willingness to embark on (or hold) a Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare – training provided with employer funding. ✔ Ability to work ethically, reflectively, and autonomously while collaborating across teams. ✔ Flexibility for Bank Holidays and alternating shift patterns.

Desirable (Nice to Have)

  • Prior safeguarding experience or qualification.
  • Understanding of mental health/behavioural support strategies.
