About the service
McCarthy House is a welcoming, therapeutic residential home providing care for up to four children and young people aged 7–17.
We support young people who may have learning disabilities, some of which may have experienced early childhood trauma, helping them to feel safe, valued, and empowered. Some of the young people we support may experience low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and challenges with communication, which can sometimes lead to behaviours that require patience and understanding. All training for this will be given.
A positive, resilient, and genuinely compassionate approach is essential, as you’ll be making a meaningful difference in their lives every day.
How you'll help to create brighter futures:
- Help us maintain the high standards of care and personal development our young people have come to expect.
- Get involved in lots of fun activities both within the home and out in the community.
- Assist with personal care and daily routines of the young people.
- Support young people to achieve positive outcomes.
- Have a good understanding of safeguarding.
- Help coach young people to develop essential life skills such as cooking, cleaning, and money matters.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
