Residential Support Worker

Children’s Home KEYVIEW / Keyworker Position

Core Responsibilities

The role requires compliance with critical legal and regulatory frameworks including:

  • Children’s Homes Regulations and Quality Standards 2015
  • Children Act 1989
  • Data Protection Act 1998
  • Health & Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018
Core Duties
  • Provide emotional support, guidance, and mentoring to children, fostering self-esteem, healthy coping mechanisms, and personal growth.
  • Assist with daily routines (meals, hygiene, school prep, bedtime) in a nurturing, respectful manner, ensuring basic care needs are met.
  • Maintain a safe, secure environment with supervision for all activities, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Implement behaviour management strategies, using positive reinforcement and structured consequences to encourage growth.
  • Support social, emotional, and educational development through planned activities, school partnerships, and educational outings.
  • Administer medications according to guidelines, maintaining accurate health records and collaborating with medical professionals.
  • Document incidents, observations, and progress in detailed, confidential records shared only with relevant team members.
  • Foster open communication between children, families, colleagues, and external support professionals.
  • Manage crisis situations, using calm, protocol-driven approaches to ensure safety and stability.
  • Support academic progress by aiding with homework, engaging in educational activities, and liaising with schools.

Key Roles & Avenues of Support
  • Act as advocate for children, ensuring their rights, needs, and voices are prioritised at all levels.
  • Collaborate with social workers, therapists, educators, and healthcare teams to develop and refine care plans.
  • Teach life skills such as cooking, budgeting, time management, and independent living preparation.
  • Promote personal hygiene habits to support overall physical well-being.

Specialised Dutries

Service Delivery
  • Provide direct, compassionate care covering daily needs (food, hygiene, medical attendance) with trusted, reliable guidance.
  • Develop behavioural interventions to support positive change, fostering communication skills, decision-making, and conflict resolution.
  • Offer academic assistance, collaborating with schools to meet individual learning needs.
  • Act as a designated Keyworker, forming a strong, one-to-one bond with a child to address their unique needs, goals, and emotional well-being.
People Management
  • Work seamlessly with colleagues, social workers, and external partners to ensure integrated, multifaceted care.
  • Maintain clear team communication to coordinate care efforts and share crucial updates.
  • Advocate aggressively for residents' needs and best interests, ensuring participation in all decision-making processes.

Resource Management & Operations
  • Manage daily household logistics (scheduling, meals, transportation, cleanliness).
  • Ensure adequate stocking of necessities such as food, clothing, hygiene products, and recreational materials.
  • Assist in budget management, balancing finances while ensuring quality care.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
  • Demonstrate compliance with regulatory standards (SSCIF, Children's Homes Regulations, and Quality Standards).
  • Contribute to the development of individualised care plans tailored to each child’s progress and goals.
  • Engage in professional training to refresh skills across childcare, safeguarding, and developmental best practices.
  • Monitor children’s physical, emotional, and psychological growth, adjusting strategies to support long-term success.
Keyworker-Specific Duties
  • Create and oversee an individualised care plan aligned with the child’s strengths, challenges, and aspirations.
  • Facilitate meaningful goal-setting in collaboration with the child, tracking progress toward personal, social, and emotional milestones.
  • Create stable, supportive interactions, acting as a confidential mentor and role model.
  • Advocate for the child’s preferences across internal and external services.
  • Continuously assess and refine approaches based on real-time feedback and needs.
  • Support smooth transitions, whether for educational shifts, independent living prep, or new routines.
