Coroner’s Officer – Resource Officer (Grade 7)
Salary & Benefits
- £38,256 – £39,276 p.a. plus extensive benefits
- Permanent contract
- 36-hour work week (full-time, with encouragement for job-sharing/part-time applications)
Location
📍 Croydon – South London Coroner’s Court, Davis House, Robert Street, Croydon, CR0 1QQ No remote/hybrid opportunities. This role is court-based only.
About South London Coroner’s Court
The Court serves Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, and Sutton. It investigates deaths deemed to be:
- Unnatural
- Violent
- Of unknown cause
Croydon Council provides resources, staffing, and support to ensure the Court operates effectively.
About The Role
We are seeking a compassionate yet professional Coroner’s Officer (Resource Officer) role. This is a fast-paced, varied position where no two days are the same.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide judicial support to the Senior Coroner, Assistant Coroners, and Coroner’s Officers
- Administrative duties:
- Coordinate hearings, inquests, and other legal proceedings
- Prepare court documentation and maintain accurate caseload files
- Liaise with Metropolitan Police, legal professionals, medical teams, and funeral directors
- Front-of-house and frontline service:
- Support bereaved families and members of the public with sensitivity and professionalism
- Usher duty in the courtrooms when required
- Financial administration:
- Raise and process purchase orders
- Work with the team to manage economic and operational demands
- Collaborative & flexible approach:
- Contribute to team initiatives and support colleagues under pressure
- Resolve operational challenges with strong judgement and initiative

Person Specification (Requirements)
You will ideally have, or be developing:
- Exceptional administrative & organisational skills, with the ability to:
- Handle competing priorities
- Work accurately under pressure
- Outstanding customer service & communication ability, with experience in:
- Supporting bereaved individuals in a sensitive manner
- Providing professional service during distressing situations
- Strong IT proficiency, including:
- Maintaining electronic case files (e.g. databases, court systems)
- Producing error-free, high-quality correspondence
- Networking & relationship-building skills, with experience working with:
- Police, legal teams, medical experts, funeral directors
- Judgement and problem-solving ability:
- Resolve operational issues independently where possible
- Escalate complex matters appropriately
- Emotional resilience & empathy, to:
- Stay composed in sensitive or distressing situations
- Process difficult topics without compromising professionalism
- Flexibility & teamwork orientation, including:
- Willingness to support colleagues beyond core duties
- Ability to contribute effectively to a small, collaborative team
