We have an exciting opportunity for an Associate to join our Restructuring & Insolvency team, based either in our London or Bristol office on a permanent basis.

Our team has a strong reputation in the restructuring and insolvency market, advising on complex stressed and distressed situations across a broad range of stakeholders including corporate debtors, lenders, sponsors, distressed investors, and insolvency practitioners.

The practice

Our Restructuring & Insolvency practice advises on complex and high-profile domestic and cross-border restructuring and insolvency matters. The practice sits within the Disputes & Risk group and undertakes a mix of non-contentious and contentious work, with a particular emphasis on advisory and transactional matters.

We act for all key stakeholders in stressed and distressed situations, with particular expertise advising lenders, debtors, sponsors, distressed investors, and insolvency practitioners. Our matters are often global in scope, highly strategic, and time-critical.

The team handles a wide variety of instructions for a diverse client base encompassing creditors, debtors, insolvency practitioners, and turnaround professionals. Our expertise covers the entire restructuring and insolvency toolkit, including advisory mandates, transactional support and contentious matters arising out of insolvency and restructuring processes. We work closely with leading restructuring accountants and turnaround professionals. Our cross-border expertise is supported by our international office network, which includes restructuring specialists in our European practice, and we have considerable sector expertise in areas such as retail, financial services, digital business, energy and renewables, and real estate and infrastructure.

Work highlights

  • Advising the administrators (Alvarez & Marsal) on the administration of Railsbank (trading as Railsr), a complex insolvency of a regulated entity.
  • Acting for the special administrators (Interpath) of Viola Money (Europe) Limited (in special administration) in the precedent-setting first use of the new Payment and Electronic Money special administration regime.
  • Advising the administrators (FRP Advisory) of Xpress Money Services Limited (in special administration) on the second use of the new Payment and Electronic Money special administration regime.
  • Advising the administrators (FRP Advisory) of Bonmarché, The Edinburgh Woollen Mill, and Peacocks.
  • Advising Specialist Aviation Services Limited (SAS), and its joint administrators from FRP Advisory, on a complex sale of the aviation provider's business, maintaining continuity for air ambulance services across the South of England.
  • Advising the administrators on the trading administration of Wiggle and Chain Reaction, and a sale of its business and assets.
  • Advising the administrators on the trading administration of Ted Baker.
  • Advising the board of directors on the sale of certain business and assets of Russell & Bromley.

The team

The team works closely with colleagues across the firm's UK offices and international network.

The core team is made up of:

  • Four Partners
  • One Legal Director
  • Two Associate Directors
  • Three Senior Associates
  • Two Associates
  • One Trainee Solicitor
  • One Senior Knowledge Lawyer

What We Are Looking For

We are seeking a qualified lawyer who can demonstrate experience in restructuring, insolvency, and/or special situations. Experience of contentious insolvency or restructuring-related disputes is welcomed, but not essential, provided you are keen to work across both contentious and non-contentious matters.

Our team prides itself on the commerciality of its advice to clients. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate the ability to communicate in this manner, be comfortable working with a range of financing, security and other documentation (and, where relevant, court procedures), and be confident working on complex, fast-moving matters.

You will need to demonstrate initiative and confidence, combined with strong teamwork skills and excellent organisational abilities. First-rate written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with versatility and an entrepreneurial spirit.

As a guide, due to the nature of the work and the structure of the team, we are looking to appoint an Associate, although we will consider candidates with more or less experience who have relevant exposure to restructuring and insolvency work.
