Royal Voluntary Service – Retail Customer Assistant
Location: Gartnavel General Hospital, 1053 Great Western Rd, Glasgow, G12 0YN Type: Part-time (10 hrs), Permanent Starting Rate: £12.71 per hour (£23,136 per annum)
About The Role
Royal Voluntary Service’s hospital cafés, shops, and trolleys are an integral part of the NHS, delivering outstanding beverages, food options, and community support. Staffed by both employees and volunteers, we ensure customers receive warmth, efficiency, and knowledge—knowing that every purchase helps fund volunteer support across our hospitals and communities.
As a Retail Customer Assistant, you’ll play a vital role in the daily operations of our café and retail outlet at Gartnavel General Hospital, supporting friendly service delivery, stock management, and cleanliness.
Your Responsibilities

Customer Service Excellence:
- Deliver friendly, efficient, and welcoming assistance to all customers.
- Inform patients, visitors, and staff about our products, retail promotions, and new offerings.
- Answer questions, process orders and payments, and use EPOS / till systems accurately.
- Operate the till and reconcile cash as needed.

Retail & Cafe Operations:
- Prepare and serve hot/cold drinks, freshly made food (e.g., cakes, sandwiches, pastries).
- Maintain stock by distributing perishables, handling deliveries, and conducting routine inventory checks.
- Organise displays, replenish stock, and order supplies as required.

Health & Safety & Compliance:
- Uphold strict food hygiene and cleaning standards, keeping workspaces tidy.
- Handle loaded trolleys of stock for transfers across the hospital site.

Volunteer Support:
- Engage with volunteers, setting a positive example to enhance their experience.

Working Pattern
- Part-time: 10 hours per week, shift-based with a mix of weekdays and weekends.
- Flexibility required, including some weekend and bank holiday shifts.
- Paid overtime opportunities available for covering absences or peak periods.
What You’ll Bring to the Team
We value passion, adaptability, and genuine customer focus. Experience in retail or hospitality is helpful but not essential—we provide thorough training!

- Demonstrate strong oral and written communication, including proficiency with email/internet.
- Showcase organisation, numeracy, and literacy at a proficient level.

Desirable but not essential:
- EPOS/till system experience.
- Basic knowledge of general administrative processes.
