Retail Deputy Manager
Retail Deputy Manager (18-hour Contract) – Why The Works?
We don’t just sell products. We inspire reading, learning, creativity, and play.
You sell the paint that turns someone into an artist. You provide the book that unleashes an inner author. You supply the games that help bring families together. You give someone the puzzle book that reconnects them with a late family member’s memory.
You never know who someone will become. With your passion and our products, you will help ignite that spark within people, allowing them to unleash their creativity, find new passions, or rekindle fond memories. The possibilities are limitless, and it all starts with you.
About The Role
Become a Retail Deputy Manager.
As a Deputy Manager, you’ll play a vital role in supporting the Store Manager to lead the team and deliver an exceptional customer experience. You’ll help drive commercial performance, maintain high operational standards, and ensure smooth leadership in the Store Manager’s absence. You’ll be a role model—motivating, coaching, and ensuring every shift runs smoothly.
Your mission is to deliver an exemplary service, spark brilliant conversations, and assist customers in their shopping missions—whether it’s discovering new products or finding gifts.
You’ll also help keep the store well-stocked, tidy, safe, and welcoming. Every shift, you contribute to an environment that runs effortlessly, fosters teamwork, and ensures everyone feels valued.
Being a Brand Ambassador
Brand Ambassador isn’t just a title—it’s everything you do, represented by the moments you create:
- That warm smile that puts a customer at ease
- The velvet welcome into the store
- Supporting colleagues with kindness and teamwork
- A child’s discovery of their new favourite toy
- Encouragement that inspires someone to reconnect with creativity or reading
Every interaction—no matter how small—can become someone’s extraordinary memory. At The Works, everyone is a Brand Ambassador.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
