RF Electronic Design Engineer

Position: RF Electronic Design Engineer Location: Based at SmOp Cleantech, Manchester Salary: Up to £33,000 pro rata (depending on experience)

The Role

An exciting opportunity has become available for a full-time 5-month contract to complete a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) focused on developing an Adaptive Multiband Metamaterial Antenna Frontend for Ultra-low Power 5G/Wi-Fi 6/6E/7/HaLow Applications.

This role will involve:

  • Working closely with an academic team from Manchester Metropolitan University.
  • A hybrid work setup (both remote and at SmOp Cleantech's Manchester premises).

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2:1 BEng in Electronic Engineering, Radio Frequency Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Alternatives considered: BSc (Hons) or B.Tech, though BEng (Hons) is preferred.
  • Advantageous: Prior industry experience or a higher qualification (e.g., MSc, PhD).

Technical Knowledge & Experience

The successful candidate should demonstrate expertise in:

Circuit & Signal Design

  • Fundamental components: impedance matching, rectifying circuits, signal processing, etc.
  • Mathematical techniques for: signal analysis, signal propagation, signal modulation.

RF Technologies

  • RF data communication protocols: NFC/RFID, WLAN, WNAN, WWAN.
  • Multi-radio standards/protocols and network convergence characterisation.
  • Design of RF subsystems, including:
    • Simulation & modelling
    • Fabrication
    • Integration
    • Characterisation
  • Antenna design (e.g., MIMO/MIMO-based topologies).
  • Beamforming optimisation algorithms.
  • Advice on 5G/Wi-Fi 6/6E/7/HaLow architectures.

Energy Harvesting Systems

  • Proficiency in:
    • Energy types
    • Harvesting methods
    • Sources & distances
    • Conversion efficiency
    • Applications

  • Skilled in C/C++/Python/Java for embedded system integration & interfacing.
