Rheumatology Clinical Nurse Specialist
Clinical Nurse Specialist (Band 7) – Rheumatology (Cross Bay Post, 24.5 hours per week)
The Rheumatology service across Morecambe Bay is seeking a substantive, cross-bay Clinical Nurse Specialist (Band 7) to work flexibly across multiple hospital sites.
Based in the southern Lake District with easy access to northern England’s major cities, this role will provide specialist support to our rheumatology services across Furness General Hospital (Barrow), Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and Westmorland General Hospital (Kendal), as well as community healthcare premises.
About the Role
This substantive Band 7 position operates on a 24.5-hour working week, with the flexibility to support multiple sites across Morecambe Bay.
The successful candidate will:
- Lead rheumatology nurse-led clinics, both face-to-face and remotely.
- Triage patient and professional enquiries via rheumatology’s answer phone and email.
- Demonstrate leadership and self-management in delivering clinical care.
- Have the ability to manage workload effectively (proven experience preferred).
- Provide holistic care and support within a multi-disciplinary team.
Responsibilities
Key duties include:
- Conducting and managing nurse-led clinics (specialist reviews, patient education, and shared care).
- Triage, assessment, and relapse management of patients with rheumatological conditions.
- Collaborating with medical colleagues (consultants, GPs, and allied health professionals) to deliver cohesive care.
- Contributing to improvement and innovation in rheumatology practice.
- Supporting professional development, such as pursuing non-medical prescribing qualifications*.
- Working across three main hospitals (FGH, RLI, WGH) and allied community healthcare settings.
- Ensuring continuity of care across Morecambe Bay services.

About Working in the Service
Our network consists of:
- Hospitals:
- Furness General Hospital (FGH) – Barrow, including ED, critical/coronary care, and specialist services.
- Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI) – Lancaster, offering full general and acute services.
- Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) – Kendal, with an Urgent Treatment Centre for conditions like fractures and minor illnesses.
- Community Sites:
- Millom Hospital, GP practices, Queen Victoria Hospital (Morecambe), and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
Inpatient, outpatient, therapeutic, diagnostic, and planned care services are decentralised to support patients locally.
Services for adults are delivered in clinic-based or home settings, with a focus on enabling independence, promoting health, and managing chronic conditions effectively.
Requirements
Essential
- Degree-level qualification or a recent credit-level higher education programme in an applicable field.
- Proven leadership or supervisory experience (or demonstrated capability for managing complex workflows).
- BN (Hons) Nursing degree obtained from the UK Nursing Council.
- Registration with the NMC (current license).
- Rheumatology or related nursing experience (preferred, though adaptable).
- Intermediate/advanced skills in communication, triage, and specialist care.
- Flexible, teamworking, and multi-setting capability.

Preferred
- Experience as a nurse-preneur or in educational roles within nursing.
- Knowledge of non-medical prescribing (an opportunity for developing this would be available).
- Familiarity with contact-based services or telehealth consultation models.
